Description

No. 1 Abbey Green, along with Nos. 3 and 4 City Walls, is a group of three townhouses that have been converted into a restaurant. These buildings likely date from the 1780s and have undergone alterations. They are constructed of brown brick, partly in Flemish bond, and feature a grey slate roof. An extension was added to the south in 1990-91.

The east face of the building, which faces Abbey Green, has a door made up of two fielded panels above two flush panels, topped with a simple overlight in a timber pilastered case that includes a frieze and a simple hood. The windows are flush sashes with painted stone sills and cambered heads, some made of gauged brick. The first storey has two blank openings and a 12-pane sash, while the second storey features four 12-pane sashes and the third storey has a 6-pane sash. The north wing has a rendered pediment gable.

On the north face, which faces the City Walls, there are two doors and two casements on the second storey, which were under repair at the time of inspection. The third storey has two small-pane sashes and a small fixed light. The west side of the building includes a round-arched stair window with 22 panes.

The interior was undergoing extensive repairs when inspected. It features an open-string open-well staircase with shaped brackets and an ornate iron balustrade. There are embrasure shutters, a door with six flush panels, and an arched opening leading to the stair hall. The windows inside have been replaced with facsimiles.

Historically, Weston's Map of Chester, published by James Hunter in 1789, shows No. 1 Abbey Green and Nos. 3 and 4 City Walls as separate properties, with a similar ground plan to what exists today, except for the later linking bay.
