Description
The railway viaduct over the Shropshire Union Canal, built in 1839 by George Stephenson and John Dixon for the Chester and Birkenhead Railway Company, is a notable structure made of rock-faced red sandstone with blue and orange brick vaulting. The main arch over the canal is constructed on a skew and features rusticated voussoirs along with dated keystones and a skew brick vault. On either side of the main arch, there is an arcade consisting of five smaller semi-circular brick arches, which are supported by stone imposts and keystones on raking stone piers. A projecting band at track level supports a low stone parapet that is topped with modern aluminium railing.
