Description
The footpath guidepost located in the north-west corner of the garden of Longlands is a late 19th century structure. It features an octagonal cast-iron post that stands on a plinth and is topped with a moulded cap and a ball finial. The finger plate, which has nicked corners, displays a raised inscription that reads:
"WIRRAL FOOTPATH ETC SOCIETY
PUBLIC FOOTPATH TO
UPTON
PLEASE KEEP TO PATH"
Additionally, it includes the phrase "BY PERMISSION OF THE COUNCIL" along the post. The National Footpath Preservation Society, which was established in 1884 under the patronage of the Duke of Westminster and others, likely oversaw the installation of this guidepost and similar examples across the Wirral shortly thereafter.
