GV II
Formerly stables, later lion house, now storage: dated 1886 probably by E.A.Ould for B.Chaffers Roberts, mid C20 alterations. Orange brick with Ruabon brick and buff sandstone dressings. Red tile roof. 1 and 2-storey 5-bay west front. Centre of facade is a driftway with semi-circular archway with datestone flanked by plaques of horses heads above. To left is a buttress and to right a circular stair turret with hexagonal spired roof, to former groom's accommodation with a Romanesque arcade over driftway. This has hipped roof with lead ball finial. Left end bay is crow-stepped and the remainder is of 1-storey with brick-mullioned windows.
Note the lion's claw marks on the base of the stair turret, for the stables were converted to contain the Mottershead's original animal collection in the 1930's.
Listed for group value only.
