Wall Fronting South (Garden) Front, Of Dorfold Hall

The wall fronting the south (garden) front of Dorfold Hall is a retaining wall, likely built in 1862. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and serves to manage the change in level of the lawns south of the Hall. The wall features a solid design with a moulded plinth and a weathered overhanging coping that has an ovolo moulded underside. The wall is only one block high between the plinth and the coping, but the plinth is deeper on the south side where the ground level is lower. At intervals of three stones, there are plain projecting pilasters, with the plinth and coping widened at these points. Openings in the wall are flanked by ball finials set on scotia moulded bases. The east end of the wall returns to the north and includes six steps that lead to the lower level, with a solid stepped balustrade of similar construction flanking the steps on both sides.
