Description
The bridge located 350 yards south of Poole Bank is an early 19th-century road bridge made of red sandstone ashlar. It features a single span and a single lane with a flush segmental arch and a projecting carriageway band above. Stone piers flank the arch on both sides, and there is a low parapet wall at road level made of large sandstone blocks with chamfered copings that extend slightly beyond the wall face. The approach sections are angled outwards and slope upwards from rectangular end piers to the inner piers, with a carved Ordnance Survey benchmark symbol on the northeast end pier. Each pier consists of a single large sandstone block that projects forward from the wall face.
Although the exact date of construction is unknown, the bridge is believed to have been built in the early 19th century to carry the Nantwich to Poole road (Wettenhall Road) over a stream south of Poole Bank Farm. The bridge is designated as Grade II due to its well-designed and constructed features, which are particularly significant for a rural location over a small stream. The design includes careful attention to detail, such as the projecting stone piers and chamfered copings, and it remains well preserved with no evidence of widening or alteration.
