Description
Hurleston Lock Number 1 (east) is a canal lock located on the Llangollen Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, built around 1805 by engineer J. Fetcher, with consultation from T. Telford. The structure is made of engineering bricks laid in English Bond and features both metal and wooden gates. The upper single gate on the west side is made of wood and has a wooden beam, while the lower pair of metal gates are noted to have been replaced in 1974. There is some sandstone dressing on the approach walls, but the lock-side edgings have been replaced with concrete blocks.
