Description
Cound Stank Bridge is an early 18th-century bridge located on the site of an earlier structure. It is built from red sandstone ashlar and features two segmental arches with channelled-rusticated voussoirs. The bridge has central triangular cutwaters with broach caps, and both central and end piers that rise to a moulded cornice and parapet. Shaped brackets flank the central pier and support the cornice. There are half-H datestones on the parapets above the central pier, but the inscription was illegible during a survey in April 1985. The bridge also has diagonal abutment retaining walls with plat bands and square end piers topped with pyramidal copings. The southern retaining wall was likely extended in the 19th century using dressed sandstone. This bridge carries the Cross Houses-Pitchford road over the Cound Brook and was first mentioned in 1682.
