Description
Brookside Cottage is a mid-17th century cottage located in Cound, with later 19th century and mid-to-late 20th century alterations and additions. The structure is timber framed with painted brick nogging, set upon a painted brick and sandstone rubble plinth. Brick additions are present, incorporating planted timbers, and the roof is covered in plain tiles. The original part of the cottage comprises two framed bays, with later additions extending from that core. It is a single storey building with an attic, featuring two gabled eaves dormers each with a 2-light wooden casement window. An integral brick end stack is visible on the right side, and an integral brick lateral stack is positioned in front of a 19th century addition to the left. The timber framing exhibits square panels (three from the sole plate to the wall plate), braced with short straight corner braces. A large 20th century plate-glass window is on the right side of the building, and a 20th century lean-to porch sits off-centre, featuring two 20th century casement windows and a boarded door in its left-hand return. A one-storey 20th century addition extends to the right, cantilevering over the Cound Brook. Two 20th century eaves dormers are located at the rear. Inside, the roof is supported by collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts, and the ceiling features chamfered cross-beams. There is a chamfered fireplace lintel.
