Description

Glebe Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dated 1701, which incorporates remains of an earlier house and features mid- to late 19th century alterations and additions. It is constructed of red brick with 20th century machine tile roofs and has a U-plan layout. The central range is aligned north-east to south-west, with flanking gabled cross-wings that project to the north-west; the wing to the north-east dates from 1701, while the south-west wing is from the mid- to late 19th century.

The south-east front has a dentil brick eaves cornice at the center and left-hand return front, a plat band, and parapeted gable ends on the 1701 range, along with a central brick stack that is off-ridge. There are two first-floor segmental-headed 19th century wooden cross-windows flanking a small two-light casement, and two ground-floor segmental-headed three-light wooden casements. The right-hand gable features ledges from a former dovecote and a central stone sundial, although the gnomon is missing. The left-hand return front has two bays with two- and three-light segmental-headed 19th century wooden casements, while the right-hand return front has two windows with 20th century casements and a central 20th century glazed door.

A datestone is located in the rear gable end of the 1701 wing, featuring moulded edges and inscribed with the date. Inside, there are chamfered beams and collar and tie-beam roof trusses from 1701 with queen struts, largely made from reused timbers, and a dairy with low shelves. William Atkis enlarged Glebe Farmhouse in 1701.
