Description
Cound War Memorial is a village war memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and altered in 1945. It was designed by George Jack and sculpted by Lawrence A Turner. The monument is made of limestone and is situated on a triangular corner site at a T-junction. It features a Calvary at the top of a column that rises from a plinth shaped like a tomb chest with a gabled roof, elevated on a platform of four steps.
On the north face, there is a carved Calvary depicting the slumped body of Christ on the cross, set beneath a gabled head. This is supported by a tapered octagonal column that transitions to a square base with broach stops. The base is part of the tomb chest or shrine, which has a gabled roof with gently-arched slopes. The gabled ends of the shrine are inscribed with the years ‘1914’ and ‘1919’ on the east and west sides, respectively. The sloping upper surfaces of the shrine are inscribed with the names of the fallen. The top step of the plinth bears the inscription ‘THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY’, while the step below features a single name flanked by the dates ‘1939’ and ‘1945’.
