Description
This is a cast-iron mile post located by Nantwich Junction Bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal, dating from around 1826. The post is dome-topped, measuring 150mm in diameter and 600mm high. It features a curved-on-plan "T" shaped distance indicator, which is divided into three panels, each measuring 300mm by 225mm. The panels display raised blue capital letters on a blue background, indicating "NANTWICH" to the north, "AUTHERLEY JUNCTION 39 MILES" to the south, and "NORBURY JUNCTION 23½ MILES" at the lower center. The panels have beaded divisions and edgings, with the lower panel resting on a beaded-ring moulding on the post. This mile post is included for its group value.
