Description

CHECKLEY-CUM-WRINEHILL C.P. CHECKLEY LANE SJ 74 NW 5/15 Hallgates Cottage - GV II

Longhouse. C16 or cl7. Timber framed with whitewashed brick infill and brick with a thatched roof covered by corrugated metal sheeting. Single storey with attic. Entrance front: mainly brick painted in simulation of timber framing. To the right is a stretch of C19 brick set with a door at far right to the left of which are two 2-light cambered-headed casement windows. To left of these is a stretch of C20 walling set with a 2-light metal framed window and to the far left are 5 x 2 cells of uneven small framing with a doorway (now blocked) to the second bay from the left. Two gabled 2-light dormer windows to the attic. C20 brick ridge stack to right of centre. The left hand gable end has 6 x 2 cells of small framing with a passing tension brace at left. Jowled corner posts and queen post truss to the roof. The rear is largely obscured by C20 outshuts except at the far right which has some disturbed timber framing.

Interior: The ground floor rooms have chamfered ceiling beams. The attics have 2 purlins and a ridge beam on which are laid widely spaced thick laths. The hay loft (to the left of the entrance front) has 2 queen post trusses.
