Description
Hallgates Cottage is a longhouse dating from the 16th or 17th century. It features a timber frame with whitewashed brick infill and a thatched roof, which is now covered by corrugated metal sheeting. The building is single storey with an attic.
The entrance front is primarily brick, painted to resemble timber framing. To the right, there is a section of 19th-century brick with a door at the far right, next to two 2-light cambered-headed casement windows. To the left of these windows is a section of 20th-century walling with a 2-light metal framed window, and at the far left, there are five sets of two cells of uneven small framing, with a doorway (now blocked) in the second bay from the left. The attic features two gabled 2-light dormer windows and a 20th-century brick ridge stack located to the right of center. The left gable end has six sets of two cells of small framing, with a passing tension brace on the left side. The building has jowled corner posts and a queen post truss supporting the roof.
The rear of the cottage is mostly obscured by 20th-century outshuts, except for the far right, which reveals some disturbed timber framing. Inside, the ground floor rooms have chamfered ceiling beams. The attic contains two purlins and a ridge beam, with widely spaced thick laths laid across them. The hay loft, located to the left of the entrance front, features two queen post trusses.
