Description
Stokes Cottage is a longhouse dating from the 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame, rendered and brick infill, and features a thatched roof. The building is single storey with an attic. The entrance front has a brick plinth supporting 14 x 2 cells of small framing with angle braces. The brickwork on the right side is painted to resemble timber framing. The doorway is located in the fifth bay from the right, which was probably originally the third bay. There are two-light casement windows on either side of the doorway, and a two-light swept dormer window on the first floor. A chimney stack is positioned at the far right. The left gable end is covered in clapboarding, while the right gable end has a 20th-century lean-to outshut at the lower body and timber framing in the gables. At the rear, there is a 19th-century outshut on the left with 8 x 2 cells of uneven small framing and an angle brace on the fourth post from the right. Inside, the cottage features chamfered ceiling beams in the parlour and an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. A staircase is located to the right of the fireplace.
