Description
The sundial, located in the gardens of Hough Hole House, dates from around 1850 and was created by James Mellor junior. It features a raking, hexagonal pillar made of hammer-dressed buff sandstone. The sundial has a projecting capstone that bears the inscription "JEMMY, JEMMY MIND YOUR OWN PEACE." At the top, there is a circular setting intended for a brass sundial plate and gnomon, which are currently stored in the house and awaiting replacement. The nickname "Jemmy" appears to refer to James Mellor.
