Description

Holker House Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building, dated 1691. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, while the sides and rear are rendered. The farmhouse features a slate roof with copings and kneelers, and has two chimneys, one in front of the ridge and another at the right gable. The building has a double pile, two-bay plan with a projecting porch at the junction of the bays.

The farmhouse stands two storeys tall and is almost symmetrical. There is a drip course at the ground floor window head level that steps over the windows and runs around the entire building. The two-storey gabled porch, which is slightly offset to the left of centre, has kneelers and a ball finial at the apex. It contains an old boarded door with a massive lintel and a first-floor window featuring three stepped round-headed lights with hollowed spandrels and a stepped hoodmould. Above the centre of this window is a square date stone with a moulded surround, inscribed in relief with 'R I' at the top and '16' and '91' in the bottom corners, along with a worn depiction of a rampant beast in the centre. The gable of the porch has a blocked oval opening.

On each side of the porch at ground floor level, there are three-light windows with chamfered mullions, and at the first floor, there is a stepped window similar to that in the porch. The left return wall has a small lean-to towards the rear, with a small window beside it, and two similar windows on the first floor and in the attic, the heads of which are crossed by a stone band. The rear wall features a door and various other openings. The interior has been altered.
