Description

India Mill is a cotton spinning mill built in 1867 for Shorrock Brothers & Co. The mill features rock-faced sandstone with sandstone dressings and has a flat roof. It has a rectangular plan measuring 330 feet by 99 feet, with projecting towers at the corners and the center of both sides. The building has six storeys and includes projecting lower engine houses on both sides near the south end.

The exterior displays rock-faced quoins and a bracketed sill-band at the fourth storey, with plain bands at mid-level on all storeys except the top, which features an impost band above the round-headed windows with keystones. The windows are flat-headed and segmental-headed on alternate floors, while the side towers have coupled round-headed windows with imposts and keystones.

The engine house on the west side is designed in a classical style with channelled rustication, featuring a rock-faced west wall with piers in the center and at the corners, and round-headed windows with exaggerated voussoirs. The side walls are made of ashlar and include large round-headed Venetian-style windows, topped with a modillioned cornice that extends around the entire structure. A modern two-storey addition continues above this. At ground level, there is a lower range linking the engine house with the chimney, and the south side consists of a rock-faced rusticated arcade of six round arches with moulded imposts, while the north side is now covered by a low office block. The engine house on the east side matches the style of the rest of the mill but has a high modern brick extension built in a re-entrant.
