Description

This is a pair of former tram shelters and attached railings that enclose the center of Belgrave Square, dating from 1902 and now closed. The structures are made of ashlar and feature domed copper-clad roofs. The south shelter is a regular octagon, while the north shelter is an elongated octagon at the rear. Both are single-storey buildings designed in a free baroque style, with a moulded stringcourse at the impost level, a moulded cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The corners have square piers at the lower level, with stumpy Ionic colonnettes above. The cornice extends over these in an exaggerated manner, supporting scrolled consoles that lead to short pillars topped with prominent caps and ball finials, with balustrades featuring ramped ends in between. The three street-facing sides have large round-headed openings, with a door on the inner side and windows on the others, all topped by a string course. The heads of these openings are designed as lunettes with Gibbs surrounds and decorated extrados. On the south wall of the south shelter, there is an attached bronze plaque with lettering in relief. The iron railings surrounding the north, west, and south sides of the square appear to be contemporary and feature knobbed bars with stone piers that have moulded cornices at intervals.
