Description
The Boer War Memorial, erected to commemorate the South African War of 1899-1902, is located in Belgrave Square, Darwen. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a bronze plaque and sculpture. The memorial consists of an elongated pedestal with a moulded plinth and rounded corners, topped with a tapered moulding. Atop this pedestal stands a roaring lion, with one paw resting on a ball. The plaque includes an inscription stating that the memorial was erected by the Mayor "in remembrance of all the Darwen men who fell," listing 14 names, along with the phrase "Theirs not to reason why / Theirs but to do and die." It also commemorates the services voluntarily rendered by 50 townsmen, with the inscription "Honour the Brave." The memorial is surrounded by curved and ramped iron railings, which are set between four carved stone piers in a low curved wall.
