Description
The Old Chapel is a former Wesleyan Methodist chapel built between 1864 and 1866 by Bates of Manchester. It is constructed of freestone and features a hipped slate roof with two chimneys on the rear wall. The building has a rectangular plan, measuring three bays by six bays, and is two storeys tall, designed in a classical style with a first-floor band.
The west facade and the first bay of the return walls are adorned with giant Corinthian pilasters that support a deep entablature featuring a dentilled and modillioned cornice. The center of the facade includes an applied portico with a pediment, which is supported by giant Corinthian attached columns arranged distyle in antis, enclosing a first-floor Venetian window. The ground floor entrance has been altered, while the ground floor features stilted segmental-headed windows, and the first floor has round-headed windows, all of which have keystones and archivolts, with imposts that extend out as string courses. The side walls are simpler, with plain pilasters and an entablature, and the last bay slightly protrudes forward. The windows on the side walls match those on the facade but lack archivolts. The interior has not been inspected and is presumed to have been altered.
