Description
The tram shelter, built between 1901 and 1904, is a timber-framed structure featuring cast iron columns and timber partitions, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has terracotta ridging. It has a rectangular plan measuring two by four bays.
Located on a gently sloping site, the shelter is accessed by two to three wide steps at one end. The timber frame showcases chamfered and fluted detailing on its main uprights. Slender cast-iron columns with fluted bases and crocketed capitals support ornamental arch braces that hold up the boarded ceiling. The end screens feature two rows of small-paned glazing bars at the top (with two windows missing) and one large row of glazing at waist height, although the original glazing has been removed. The low-pitched roof is covered with a mix of standard and fish-scale slates, has wide eaves with louvred half-gables at the ends, a plain terracotta ridge, and remnants of former ball finials. Ventilator shafts rise from the public conveniences below, and the original rainwater goods are still in place.
Inside, the shelter has head-height central partitions along both axes, creating four compartments for protection from the wind. These boarded partitions include replacement low bench seating supported by original cast-iron brackets.
