Description
The Bede Memorial, formerly known as Bede Memorial Cross, is a memorial cross located on Whitburn Road, built in 1904. It was created by sculptor G.W. Millburn from York and designed by C.C. Hodges from Hexham, who also excavated Hexham Abbey. The memorial is made of granite and features a tall tapered shaft in a Saxon style. On the west side, it has a dedication to Bede and Eadfrith, along with extracts from Bede's writings. The east side displays an interlace pattern and low-relief carved scenes depicting Bede's life. The north side features a vine pattern and northern saints, accompanied by a runic inscription. The south side has an inhabited vine and an inscription in uncials. A later inscription notes that the cross was removed in 1914 and restored to its current site in 1921.
