Description
These ladies' and gentlemen's public conveniences were built between 1901 and 1904. They are constructed of red brick with stone coping and have cast-iron newel posts to their entrances.
The building has a T-shaped plan with split stairs leading down to rectangular underground chambers. The entrances to the ladies' and gentlemen’s toilets are bounded by low brick walls with a central parapet and stone coping. Some original cast-iron newel posts remain, one to each entrance bearing the inscription "P and W Maclellan/Limited/Engineers/Glasgow". Later replacement railings are present.
The split staircases have white glazed brick walls and descend to underground entrances with stone lintels and boarded doors. The walls are clad in white glazed tiles, and the floors are terrazzo with a pink, red and grey theme with borders.
In the ladies' toilets, a short passage is flanked to the left by a large corner cloakroom with a timber window and a continuous denticulated timber cornice. This is connected to an attendant's room, also with an identical cornice and an entrance with an original panelled and leaded glazed door, retaining coloured leaded glass and door furniture. A pair of water-closet cubicles continue on this side, similarly detailed with a continuous cornice and architraves; the original doors are louvered at the lower parts with three horizontal lights above. Opposite is another pair of water-closet cubicles with a rounded corner but otherwise similar detailing. Original sanitary ware includes two white enamel pedestals inscribed 'Harrison's No 2', and a suite of three interlocking white enamelled hand basins with panelled undersides. An original shelf is believed to be present in the attendant’s room, though it was not inspected.
The gentlemen’s toilets have a row of ten original white enamel urinals with original pipework and bronze water disperser caps on the left side. The right side features a large corner cloakroom, entered and lit by a door and flanking window, the latter retaining an upper panel of original coloured leaded glazing. A suite of four original white enamel hand basins, with panelled undersides, are retained. This is attached to a row of three water-closet cubicles with timber cornices, architraves and similar doors to those in the ladies' area.
