Description
Low Hill House is a house built around 1812 for Samuel Crompton, who later enlarged it by adding wings. The building is now divided into flats. The central part is made of coursed squared sandstone, while the wings are constructed from random rubble sandstone, with some sections rendered. The roofs are slate, hipped on the wings, and there are various chimneys.
The original house in the center is double-pile, symmetrical, and has three bays across two storeys. The entrance features a central open pedimented Tuscan doorcase with a semi-circular fanlight above. There are two tall windows at the ground floor and three above, all with altered glazing. The projecting wings are two storeys high and have triple windows at the ground floor, adorned with tetrastyle pedimented architraves, a tall window above, and a moulded cornice. The left wing is rendered and painted white, with altered glazing in the ground floor window. The right wing appears to retain the original glazing in the ground floor window, but the render has been removed, exposing the rubble wall beneath.
The side and rear walls are of less architectural interest, and the interior has been altered. Historically, Samuel Crompton, the inventor of the spinning mule, lived here for five years while he was involved in a commercially unsuccessful bleaching business in Darwen. The house later became the residence of Eccles Shorrock, the owner of India Mill.
