Description

The entrance to the Sough Railway Tunnel, part of the Blackburn, Darwen and Bolton Railway, was built between 1847 and 1848 under the supervision of Resident Engineer Terence Flanagan. The structure is made of rock-faced gritstone and is designed in a medieval style. It features a horseshoe-shaped arch adorned with rusticated voussoirs and a battlemented parapet, which includes a machicolated turret corbelled on each side of the tunnel entrance.
