Description
St Mary's War Memorial is located at the corner of Dean Road and South Eldon Street, where St Mary’s Church once stood before its demolition. This memorial, made of Heworth Stone, is approximately 4.5 meters tall and features a Celtic cross that rises from a tapering plinth. The plinth is set on a base accessible from the pavement by a set of stone steps at the front.
The front face of the cross is decorated with a reversed sword carved in low relief. The names of those commemorated are inscribed on the faces of the plinth, while the main dedicatory inscription is located at the base of the plinth. It reads: "TO THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD & IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ & CONGREGATION WHO FELL BY SEA, LAND AND AIR IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918."
