Description
The River Police Offices, built in 1886, are located on the north elevation of the River Tyne. The main façade is constructed of ashlar stone, while the other three sides are made of buff-colored brick with stone dressings. The building has three storeys and is divided into three bays. It features vermiculated quoins, a crowning entablature, and a blocking course. The outer bays include bay windows across all three storeys, with each of the three lights adorned with an architrave. A continuous cill band is present at the ground floor, along with a plat band at the first floor.
The central bay is particularly elaborate, showcasing a vertical arrangement of pediments. The entrance features a semi-circular fanlight and a deeply projecting segmental pediment supported by deep scrolled brackets. The first-floor window is framed by an architrave, entablature, and triangular pediment, with the frieze inscribed "AD 1886." Above this pediment, there is a rectangular panel with an inscription instead of a second-floor window. The crowning feature of the central bay is a free-standing gable with concave sides and a triangular pediment, embellished with a circular plaque displaying the coat of arms of the force. This building stands out as a significant public structure in a prominent position by the River Tyne, next to the former Customs House, symbolizing the authority they both held over the river.
