Description
The locks and lock gates in Albert Edward Dock were built in 1882 for the Tyne Improvement Commissioners by Ure and Messent. The lock walls are made of sandstone ashlar, and the gates are constructed from iron. There are four lock walls with curved nosing at the entrance to the dock, featuring curved recesses for the gate machinery. The western lock has two pairs of gates approximately 25 metres apart, while the eastern lock has two pairs about 4 metres apart. The dock was renamed Coble Dene after its opening by Prince Albert-Edward.
