Description
The Chevington and Broomhill War Memorial is a tall structure located in the north-east corner of the churchyard of St John’s Church. Made of Heworth stone, it features a Latin cross with a moulded foot that rises from the top of a tapering cross shaft. The broad foot of the cross shaft is set on an octagonal pedestal, which is decorated on four sides with wreaths carved in low relief. This pedestal sits atop a square plinth, which is supported by a stepped base.
On the pedestal, there are four shield-shaped marble plaques mounted on opposing faces, below a string of laurel leaves. Three of these plaques bear the inscription "DULCE ET/ DECORUM EST/ PRO PATRIA MORI." The main dedicatory inscription is found on a square marble plaque on the front face of the plinth, which reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ CHEVINGTON/ AND/ BROOMHILL DISTRICT/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918."
The rear face of the plinth features the inscription "LORD OF HOSTS/ BE WITH US YET/ LEST WE FORGET/ LEST WE FORGET." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are recorded on marble plaques on either side of the plinth, with sloping plaques below each side listing the names from the Second World War. The memorial is surrounded by a low stone kerb with low posts that support a metal rail.
