Description
South Lodge is a house built in 1907 by H Hedley for F G Wainwright, a shipbroker. It is constructed of pebbledash with sandstone dressings, and has a flat-tiled roof. The building is based on a half E-plan, with a service wing replacing the left half of the plan. It has two storeys and six bays on the main south elevation, with a one-bay return, and nine bays on the north elevation which features two cross gables at the centre housing a servants’ entrance and the main house entrance. A tall mullioned and transomed staircase window is above the servants’ door. The main house entrance is in a corbelled recess, with an elliptical-headed door, the upper part being glazed, and a deep curved hood on brackets. It is fitted with an art nouveau bell push. There are five-light windows in a one-bay set back, and two small two-light and one ox-eye windows irregularly placed in the projecting cross-gable. The south elevation features a one-storey porch off-centre, with ground-floor windows of four lights, some of which have had their central mullions and transoms removed. The first-floor windows consist of 4, 2, 2, 2, 4, and 4 lights. All windows have stone mullions with quarter-round mouldings both internally and externally, with alternating block jambs that have surrounding quarter-round mouldings. The roofs are hipped with swept eaves, except for the gables over the entrances and the Chinese-influenced service wing, which is of two low storeys. Three square, tapering, rendered chimneys are located on the ridges. The interior includes rooms with moulded fireplaces with stone kerbs, doors with Tudor-arched top panels and ornamental hinges and lock plates, and staircases with broad handrails and panelled balustrades. The overall design represents a balanced composition of varied shapes and scales.
