Description

The Boldon War Memorial stands in a small garden on the south side of Front Street, East Boldon, accessible from the pavement by a short flight of four steps. It consists of a stone Celtic cross, approximately 6.5 metres tall, set upon a chamfered pedestal. The pedestal is supported by a square base with two steps.

The front face of the cross features richly ornamented foliage carved in low relief, and a depiction of St George slaying the dragon at the base of the cross shaft. Blind panels mark the sides of the shaft. The primary inscription on the front of the pedestal reads "THE PEOPLE OF BOLDON / RECORD IN EVER / GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / THE NAMES / OF THEIR BROTHERS / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918. / THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US / BOTH BY NIGHT AND BY DAY / 1 SAMUEL XXV 16."

A later dedication, inscribed on a stone inset into the sloping front face of the base, reads "LET US ALSO REMEMBER / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES)." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on stone plaques affixed to the left and right sides of the pedestal. The garden is enclosed by a low retaining wall, with two garden benches and two small planters situated on the lawn either side of the memorial. These garden elements are not considered to be of special interest.
