Description

The Quadrangle Gateway, also known as The Arches, is a Grade II listed gateway built in 1911 by W. H. Knowles for Armstrong College. It is constructed from dark red Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and features a roof of plain tiles, designed in the Tudor style. The gateway has a gabled front that rises three storeys and consists of one bay. It showcases paired moulded arches with blind tracery above, which contains a statue of Edward VII in a central niche. Below the pierced parapet, there is a Gothic-lettered Latin legend in the frieze. The upper floors are recessed between wide full-height buttresses and feature a two-storey canted bay with large royal arms displayed in a panel between the floors. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed, and the structure is topped with a battlemented parapet that includes corner pinnacles.
