Description

Claremont Buildings is a Grade II listed structure located on Eldon Place in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was built in 1896 by W. Hope for Fairless Harrison, a tanner, with additions made in 1905. The building features a steel frame and is clad in sandstone ashlar, topped with a graduated slate roof that has a copper dome on the turret.

The building stands three storeys tall with an attic and has six irregular bays. The ground floor is defined by Doric Order pilasters, while the first floor features Composite Order pilasters, which frame the four right bays that contain shop windows on both the ground and first floors. The two left bays have an office entrance on the right, sheltered by a segmental canopy, with alterations made to the ground floor in these bays and the third bay.

Sash windows are present throughout, with those on the second floor grouped in panelled pilasters beneath segmental pediments. There is a shop entrance at the right corner, situated under a corbelled turret. The building also features gabled dormers over the two left bays and three right bays, which are connected by a pierced parapet and adorned with raised shaped pediments and ball finials. Tall ashlar chimneys complete the architectural details of this notable building.
