Description
The Fine Art Department is a college of art built in 1911 by W.H. Knowles for Armstrong College. It features dark red brick with ashlar dressings and a roof made of plain tiles, designed in the Tudor style. The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of a basement and one storey, with an additional storey set back. The right return of the building projects forward and includes a basement and two storeys. There are three irregular bays on the main façade and three in the return.
Access to the entrance is via steps leading up to a doorcase supported by paired Ionic columns and topped with an open segmental pediment that displays the Royal Arms. The entrance features double doors and a fanlight with glazing bars. Flanking the door are two-light cusped windows, and there is a similar-style canted bay window at the left end. The ground floor has a battlemented parapet, while above the entrance, a gabled bay set back from the entrance contains stone mullioned-and-transomed windows beneath a drip mould.
The steeply-pitched roof is topped with an octagonal lantern featuring an ogee dome and a tall spike finial. The building also has ornamented rainwater heads. The wing that breaks forward on the right side includes stone mullioned-and-transomed windows, an octagonal stair turret with a hipped roof, and a terra cotta ball finial.
