Description
The former School of Bacteriology, now known as the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, was built between 1922 and 1923. It was designed by the architectural firm Knowles, Oliver & Leeson for Armstrong College. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has plain tile roofs, featuring raised coped ashlar gables. It is two storeys tall with an attic.
The main front of the building has five windows and includes a deep plinth and a projecting ashlar cornice supported by carved corbels. The central bay projects slightly and is topped with a curved gable. There is a central moulded four-centred arched doorway with double panel doors, which is adorned with an ornate ashlar hood mould that features five blind tracery arches. Above this doorway is a tall 9-light cross casement staircase window set in a moulded ashlar surround, and above in the gable is a small fixed light. Flanking the central bay are two six-light cross mullion windows, and above these are two taller windows with four-centred heads. The building has a plain brick parapet with moulded ashlar coping, and on either side, there are two hipped roof dormer windows.
Inside, there is a reconstituted stone staircase with a woven cast iron balustrade and an oak handrail.
