Description
St Ethelbert's Gate is a Grade I listed gateway with a former chapel above, now used as a classroom. It dates from around 1316 and has undergone early 19th-century restorations by W. Wilkins, as well as 20th-century alterations. The structure is built of flint and ashlar and has two storeys. There is a small door on the left side that leads to a clockwise spiral stair. The gateway features a two-centre moulded arch supported by attached columns, with 20th-century spandrels depicting the George and Dragon. To the left and right of the arch are blind niches with foliated triangular over-arches. A quatrefoil string-band runs along the first floor, which also has restored statue and window niches with foliated pointed over-arches. The building is topped with a decorated cornice and a parapet that includes circular flushwork and a central pediment. Inside, there are two bays of Lierne-vaulting that spring from tripartite shafts. The site is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
