Description
26 Tombland is a former house now used as an office. The building features a 15th-century undercroft beneath the carriage entry at the eastern end. This undercroft, which is constructed from a mix of brick and stone, is likely a side chamber of a larger undercroft that has been truncated at the west by a 15th-century wall associated with the building above, which contains the current entry. The undercroft has a four-centred profile with one moulded brick cross-rib that springs from moulded corbals or capitals on wall piers. The facade dates from the late 18th century. The rear of the building was completely rebuilt in the late 20th century and is covered with plain tiles. The structure has three storeys plus a semi-basement and consists of seven bays, with the two left-hand bays recessed and featuring a road arch. The central door is framed by a two-column Doric portico and a pediment. The building has sash windows throughout, which include glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. Brick quoins terminate the five bays, and there is a box cornice along the top, along with four flat roof dormers.
