Description
2 The Close is a former house, now used as an office, dating from the mid-18th century, with a small rear range added around 1702. The building is constructed of red brick and has a pantile roof. It stands three storeys high plus a semi-basement and features seven bays. The central doorway is framed by a rusticated round-headed architrave with a keystone, flanked by two Renaissance Ionic columns that support a segmental pediment. There are nine steps leading up to the street, accompanied by wrought iron railings and a simple overthrow with a lamp. The basement has 2-light casement windows with three-centre arches, while sash windows with glazing bars and flat rubbed brick arches are present throughout the building. A flat string course runs above the ground floor, and the parapet is topped with a modillion cornice. Inside, there is a staircase with turned balusters, and the front left-hand room is panelled. The left-side extension is two storeys high plus a semi-basement, with two bays, also made of red brick. It features blind ground floor windows and 2-light casements on the first floor, with a brick modillion cornice below the parapet.
