Description
Nos. 5-13 on Side in Newcastle upon Tyne are shops and offices built around 1855. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof, with brick chimneys. Designed in the Italianate style, it stands three storeys tall and features five bays, with the central bay being narrower and containing an open passage that leads to stairs and workshops at the back. The four shops are arcaded, supported by slender pilasters with leafy capitals that hold up elliptical arches, leading to the shops and recessed entrances. Each floor is adorned with pilasters and an entablature, with the upper floors featuring modillioned cornices that frame round-headed sash windows set in pilaster surrounds, also with leafy capitals. The impost bands have similar decorative carving, and the windows are paired, except in the central bay. There is a painted mirror advertisement in the right reveal of the Quayside Newsagency, which reads: "MURATTI'S WORLD RENOWNED CIGARETTES/'ARISTON'/SMOKED BY/ROYALTY AND NOBILITY/'NEB-KA'/SMOKED BY MILLIONS."
