Description
17 Sandhill is an office building, later used as a bank, constructed in 1885 by A B Gibson for Susannah Gibson. The building is built of ashlar sandstone, with a painted plinth, and has a Welsh slate roof with ashlar dressings. It is designed in a Free Renaissance style, standing four storeys high with a basement, and has a symmetrical façade of four windows.
The rusticated ground floor features multi-panelled double doors, positioned to the left, set within a keyed round arch that is flanked by long, curved brackets supporting a deep stone hood. The basement has partly blocked windows flanking a four-panel door. The ground floor windows are sash windows. The first and second floors are defined by Ionic half-columns and end pilasters, each with an entablature; the second floor has a modillion cornice. The central two bays project slightly on the first and second floors, featuring balustraded balconies. Similar balconies are present on the third floor. Decorative lozenge ornamentation is present on the column and pilaster plinths, and the outer bays feature patterned window aprons. The third floor has eight-pane sashes set within architraves; the outer bays are flamed by shallow pilasters supporting an entablature that breaks forward over the pilasters. The parapet includes ball finials to the pilasters at the ends and a central, wide dormer with swept side panels framing the pilasters of a tall casement and an unsupported high pediment. The steeply pitched roof is finished with stone gable coping and high, wide end chimneys.
