Description
Akenside House is a Grade II listed office building dated 1902, located on Akenside Hill in Newcastle upon Tyne. The ground floor is finished in polished dark granite, while the upper sections are constructed from sandstone ashlar. The building features a dark slate roof topped with a copper dome and rises to five storeys with attics.
The design includes deeply projecting eaves cornices, with the end bays showcasing rusticated pilasters and shallow canted bay windows that extend three storeys. The central five bays form a shallow bow, and the first floor is horizontally rusticated, featuring a carved date panel above the centre window. The second floor has pediments over three central windows, each adorned with elaborate keystones. Between the third and fourth floors, there are two cartouches surrounded by wreaths, fasces, swags, and other decorative elements. The prominent eaves cornice above the central five bays is flanked by oeuil-de-boeuf windows, each with cornices above and consoles on either side. The mansard roof is topped with a central octagonal lantern, which also has a copper dome.
