Description
The Red House is a house located on Sandhill in Newcastle upon Tyne. It dates from the 17th century but was refronted in the early 18th century. The building is made of painted brick with painted ashlar dressings, and it has five storeys and three bays. The ground floor has been renewed. The wedge stone lintels are carved to suggest alternately-raised voussoirs above sash windows, most of which are in wide boxes. The top floor features fixed lights with glazing bars in the side windows and a central casement. There are floor strings and a renewed ashlar parapet coping. Unfortunately, interior features on the second and third floors were lost in a fire. The building also has a brick-vaulted cellar, and the rear top floor includes a chamfered Tudor-arched stone doorway.
