Description

This is a shop and office building on Grainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, dating to circa 1874. Constructed of sandstone ashlar, it is 3 storeys and has attics, arranged over 5 bays. The design is in the Jacobean style. The ground floor has been altered. The upper floors retain tall sash windows with late 19th-century cross glazing bars. The facade features pilasters and an entablature on each floor. The first floor has a Tuscan order, with the central four pilasters rusticated; it is topped by a dentilled cornice. The second floor incorporates an Ionic order, with a pulvinated frieze and a modillioned cornice. The three attic windows are framed by a Corinthian order, with lower pilasters flanking shaped end panels. A scrolled pediment surmounts the central attic window, supported by long keys. Above this is a shaped gable featuring a central cartouche beneath a raised pediment, and urn finials.
