Description

The Union Club is a club building dating from around 1874, designed by M.P. Manning. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. This corner building is designed in the French Renaissance style and consists of three storeys and attics, with three wide bays.

The central bay has a double door and fanlight that are recessed behind an arch, with a cross window to the left. The outer bays feature flanking tripartite stone-mullioned windows and an entrance arch, all supported by brackets that hold first-floor oriels and a balcony above the arched recess over the door.

On the first floor, there are pilasters and a cornice, while the smaller second-floor windows are positioned under a cornice that is interrupted by half-dormers above the oriels. The dormers and a high panel over the central bay, which contains small windows, are adorned with consoles and raised pediments. Very tall pedimented chimneys flank this panel. The steep-pitched roof has hips that break forward over the end bays. The left return of the building, which faces St. John's Church, has a similarly ornate design.
