Description

The George Stephenson Memorial is a statue located on Westgate Road in Newcastle upon Tyne, built in 1862 by J. G. Lough. It is made of sandstone and bronze. The memorial features a wide square step leading up to a heavily rusticated plinth, which supports a tapered octagonal pedestal. Atop this pedestal is a seated heroic figure of George Stephenson. The corners of the pedestal are adorned with four over-life-size figures that represent different aspects of Stephenson's work: a miner, a locomotive engineer, a blacksmith, and a bridge builder.
