Description

Barclay's Bank and Collingwood Buildings is a bank, shops, and offices built in 1899, with completion in 1903. The original hotel was designed by Oliver and Leeson, while Cackett and Burns Dick adapted it for bank use. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with grey granite porches and features a dark slate roof. It is designed in a Free Baroque style with extensive carved decoration. The structure has four storeys and attics, with a three-bay curved entrance section on the left and eleven wide bays. The ground floor is arcaded, with a Giant Corinthian Order above. Tuscan columns frame the revolving doors in the left corner and the recessed entrance in the central bay, with the bank entrance located in the fourth bay. The deep, panelled soffits enclose lunettes with glazing bars over the central office entrance and five left tripartite windows, as well as similar soffits over five right Diocletian windows. There are two-storey oriels above the central entrance, in the second bay on either side, and in the end bays. The intermediate bays and the third floor have plain sashes, with tripartite windows above the oriels. The alternately-pedimented dormers contain round-headed windows, with Venetian windows above the oriels. The building has a mansard roof. Inside, the banking hall features high-quality stucco decoration by Laidler of Newcastle and mahogany fittings by Waring and Gillow of Lancaster and London, designed by Cackett and Burns Dick.
