Description
Irving House is a Grade II listed office building, dated 1910, designed by William Bell for the North Eastern Railway Company. It is built from sandstone ashlar and features a Free Baroque style. The building has four storeys and five bays, with a central wider bay that includes steps leading up to a renewed double door and fanlight, all set within a rusticated surround. This is flanked by recessed attached rusticated Ionic columns that support a keyed arch and an open pediment, which is adorned with an elaborate cartouche bearing the name "IRVING HOUSE."
The building has a plinth and a rusticated ground floor, with round-headed sash windows featuring carved keystones beneath a cornice. All upper windows have architraves, with those on the first floor showcasing Gibbs surrounds, while the central tripartite window is topped with a central pediment. A cornice on the first floor supports giant enriched Ionic pilasters, with double keystones on the first floor and triple keystones in the central bay. The second-floor windows have cornices, and the third floor features aprons and moulded sills, with a swag and garland decoration on the central window.
At the top, there is an entablature with a modillioned cornice and a central segmental pediment that includes the dated cartouche. A balustrade sits above this, with consoles flanking a central raised panel. The building is capped with two tall corniced end chimneys.
