Description
The lodge to the south of Fleming Memorial Hospital is a hospital porter's lodge built in 1887. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone ashlar dressings, and features a Lakeland slate roof with terracotta ridges. Designed in the Jacobean style, the lodge has an L-shaped plan, is one storey high, and consists of three bays.
The entrance is a round-arched door set within an extruded stone porch that includes half-fluted pilasters, an entablature, and a balustraded parapet topped with end ball finials. The right bay projects and is accentuated with quoins and a plinth, topped by a shaped pedimented gable that has a panel in an elaborate surround, although the inscription is illegible. The left bay features a plinth and a quoined half-octagonal end with a cornice and parapet.
The windows are stone mullioned and transomed. The roof is hipped over the left end and raised in the center to form a pyramidal shape, crowned by an octagonal moulded stone stack on a brick base. Similar architectural details are present on the other sides, including another shaped gable on the right return.
