Description

The lodge at Sauchie Hospital, designed by Messrs Melvin & Son in 1895, is a single-storey, three-bay structure that served the former infectious diseases hospital. The southwest elevation features squared and snecked bull-faced pink sandstone, while the rest of the building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, accented with polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a base course, stop-chamfered long and short dressings, projecting cills on scrolled panels, and quoins. The eaves overhang and have timber bargeboards, with the gableheads originally half-timbered but now infilled.

The southwest entrance elevation is asymmetrical, with a central doorway featuring a panelled timber door. To the left is a bipartite window, and to the right is an advanced gabled bay with a bipartite window at its centre, topped by an open segmental pediment. The southeast elevation is blank, while the northeast elevation was not visible in 2001. The northwest elevation is gabled.

The lodge predominantly has timber sash and case windows with a margine-pane glazing pattern in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with graded green-grey slate and features terracotta tiled ridges with finials on the gableheads. There are corniced gablehead stacks and stacks that break the pitch, topped with circular cans. Cast iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers are also present.

The interior was not seen in 2001.

To the west of the lodge, there are gatepiers and boundary walls consisting of low sandstone quadrant walls topped with railings. The square-plan sandstone ashlar piers at the angles have segmental arched caps.
