Description
The Napoleon Pillar, located off Carsebridge Road in Alloa, is an antique Roman Doric column that stands approximately 10 feet tall. It features a dome cap atop an abacus, or flat slab, and is believed to date back to the Roman occupation of Egypt.
A plaque on the pillar states that it was captured by Napoleon at Grand Cairo in Egypt in 1798. After being taken by the Allies during its journey to France, it was sent to Florence, where it was purchased by C. E. Dede. The pillar was then forwarded to Altona in Schleswig Holstein, with a note indicating it was presented to John Bald Harvey by Miss Dede on August 14, 1852.
